NEWS FLASH *  IPTW 2019 Stirling Castle,
Scottish Construction Now

 

Stirling conservation centre to host international traditional trades event.

Some of the world’s foremost practitioners in traditional trades will be gathering in Stirling from Thursday 5 September as the Engine Shed hosts the annual International Preservation Trades Workshop (IPTW).

With the theme of ‘Crafting the Future’, this year’s event will be run in partnership with the Preservation Trades Network (PTN).

Taking place outside of the US for the first time, the three-day conference will bring together building conservation specialists to share knowledge, skills and best practice across a range of fields including stonemasonry, glasswork and woodwork.

NEWS FLASH *  SCOTTISH LIME CENTRE TRUST CELEBRATES WITH PRINCE CHARLES

 

Scottish Lime Centre Trust (SLCT) received a visit from HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay to celebrate their 20,000th learner, Colin Rowan of Rowan Stoneworks.
Traditional and sustainable building is a great interest HRH The Prince of Wales, who established the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community. The Prince enjoyed meeting the tutors and students from the SLCT as well as school children, who were carving stone with the supervision of Richard Groom. Techniques for applying limewash, repointing stone rubble walls with lime mortars and refurbishing sash windows were some of the traditional built heritage crafts demonstrated.  
Roz Artis, Director of the SLCT said ‘I was delighted to show HRH Prince of Wales the breadth of traditional building skills we teach and our Building Materials Laboratory which is the starting point for understanding the component parts of traditional buildings and how they should be repaired with the right materials’.

John McRitchie

McRitchie is the Director of McRitchie Construction Limited in Crossford, Scotland and has been running McRitchie Traditional Carpentry Artisans for the past four years.  A young veteran of the woodworking world, the 29-year-old master craftsman has been honing his skills in carpentry and joining since the age of ten.

NEWS FLASH // Jonny Graduates from MTC Artisans                                     Mastercrafts Academy

Jonny has been working with MTC for the last year and a half. In this time he has completed a full NVQ3 in Heritage Skills Wood Occupations. Combining this with his previous experience as an advanced certified carpenter & joiner the new skills Jonny has learned have earned him the title of MTC master craftsman. Through an intense year Jonny has steadily progressed in his craft taking challenges head on and never giving up in difficult situations. Entering Conservation building trades is sure to be a challenge for anyone but with this level of commitment and pride in work, MTC has a very valuable team member.
